How Do Double-Digit Loss Super Bowl Teams Play The Next Season? Trends for 2025 Chiefs

Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

The dream of the NFL’s first-ever Super Bowl “three-peat” died in the heart of the Big Easy on Sunday evening. The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs were routed by the Philadelphia Eagles, 40-22, in Super Bowl LIX.

There is no active Missouri sports betting yet, but it’s on the way. For now, the Chiefs open the 2025 NFL offseason as the No. 2 Super Bowl LX favorite on DraftKings Sportsbook, at +700. That’s behind Philly (+600) and tied with the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens for the No. 2 spot in the 32-team league.

We used Pro-Football-Reference.com to find trends for how teams that lost by 10 points or more in the Super Bowl do the next NFL season. The research was done from the 2000 Super Bowl until the 2024 Super Bowl, including the 10 teams that have lost by 10 or more points.

BetMissouri.com will have the best Missouri sportsbook promo codes when the state launches, which should be late in 2025.

On Sunday, Philly raced to a 24-0 halftime lead, before the Eagles coasted to the final margin, leaving Chiefs head coach Andy Reid to pick up the pieces and try again in 2025.

Of the 10 teams that lost the Big Game by double-digits since 2000, those squads finished the following season with an average record of 8-8. Only four of the 10 (or 40%) made the postseason and none of them making it past their Conference Championship game.

The team that fared best the year after losing the Super Bowl in blowout fashion was these very same Chiefs, in the 2020 season. The went 12-5 and lost the AFC Championship Game to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The other teams to get routed in the Super Bowl and rebound the next season to make the playoffs were the 2005 Seattle Seahawks (who lost in the NFC Divisional Round), the 2009 Indianapolis Colts (who lost in the AFC Wild Card Round) and the 2013 Denver Broncos (who lost in the AFC Divisional Round).

For Reid’s bunch, the road to redemption begins in September. Kansas City looks to put its one-sided romp at the hands of the Eagles in the past when the 2025 NFL regular season kicks off and another 17-game campaign begins.
