Veteran pitcher Sonny Gray will once again be part of the St. Louis Cardinals rotation in 2025. Last year, in his first season with the Cards, Gray posted a 13-9 record with a 3.84 earned-run average in 166-1/3 innings pitched.
Gray, who turned 35 in November, helped the Cards overachieve in 2024. St. Louis posted an 83-79 record, finishing second in the National League Central. Gray’s 13 wins were tops on the squad.
With Opening Day now less than two weeks away, BetMissouri.com and our Missouri sports betting experts wanted to know what month Gray’s best as a pitcher is. We used BaseballReference.com to break down the stats for each month, combining March and April and September and October because there are so few games played in March and October during the regular season.
Sonny Gray’s Best Month of The Season
Month | Win % | Innings | ERA | SO/9 | BA |
March/April | .583 | 64.2 | 2.54 | 9.9 | 0.206 |
May | .600 | 80.4 | 3.11 | 10.7 | 0.213 |
June | .467 | 78.3 | 3.06 | 7.6 | 0.234 |
July | .333 | 77.3 | 5.84 | 8.7 | 0.277 |
August | .500 | 101.4 | 2.86 | 9.9 | 0.201 |
Sept./Oct. | .611 | 64.2 | 2.74 | 9.7 | 0.236 |
One reason why Gray is entering his 13th season in the majors is his consistency. Aside from July, the 5-foot-10 righty has really pitched consistently well over the past three seasons.
Gray started and finished strong last season. He went 3-1 with a 1.16 ERA in four starts during March and April. In September and October, he posted a 2.89 ERA in three starts. In both periods, he had a WHIP below 1.000 and struck out 56 batters over 42 innings between the first and final months of the season.
Cardinals Longshots In 2025
Missouri sports betting is not scheduled to start until later this year, perhaps after baseball season ends. Oddsmakers are bearish on the Cardinals contending this season. FanDuel gives the Cardinals odds of +850 to win the NL Central. That ranks fourth out of the five teams, with only the Pirates’ +1000 odds longer.
As such, St. Louis also faces long odds to reach the postseason, which it missed in 2023 for the first time since 2018. DraftKings gives the Cards odds of +360 to make the playoffs either as a division champ or wild card team. And Caesars Sportsbook offers St. Louis at +8000 to win the World Series, which it last accomplished in 2011.
